The ASIPI Summit 2025 in Rio de Janeiro brought together experts and industry leaders to discuss key Intellectual Property (IP) challenges and developments in Latin America. As part of the event, a seminar organized under the IP Key–EUIPO agreement addressed critical topics, from trademark registration efficiency to the growing threat of piracy and counterfeiting.
One of the major legislative advancements highlighted was El Salvador’s new Intellectual Property Law, set to take effect on February 15, 2025. The law aims to streamline trademark registration, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and strengthening legal certainty for businesses and entrepreneurs.
Piracy and counterfeiting also took center stage, particularly the rise of illegal streaming platforms that exploit content from services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV. Experts emphasized the urgent need for stronger enforcement measures to protect creative industries.
The discussion on Geographical Indications (GIs) and Appellations of Origin showcased Brazil’s leadership in the region, boasting 127 registered geographical indications and 17 appellations of origin. This underscores a growing movement to preserve authenticity and promote local industries.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on IP rights also sparked debate. With AI increasingly acting as a creator of content, services, and products, legal experts questioned how human inventiveness and authorship rights should be safeguarded in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The seminar reinforced that IP protection is vital for innovation. As Latin America adapts to new technological and legal challenges, collaboration between governments, industry stakeholders, and the legal sector remains essential to ensuring a balanced and effective IP system for the future.
